An old ritual in Serbia, 02.03.2014.

Every year, on the last Sunday of the last week before Easter fasting, teenagers in Serbian village Glavica organise the carnival, called “Bele poklade”. It could be translated as the White carnival, because it is organized at the end of the White week, the week in which it is forbidden to eat meet, but dairy products and eggs can be eaten. After this week, it is not allowed to eat anything of this. This carnival has its roots in old pagan customs and it is now an example of their partial syncretism with christianity. This carnival is organised in many Serbian villages but in totally different way. In Glavica village, teenagers wears plastic masks. They create some kind of funny wedding ceremony where boys are dressed as girls, with a bride, who is also a boy, and a groom leading a procession. Serbia, Glavica, 02.03.2014.
